The New Luxury: Local Experiences, Authenticity & A Sense of Place
For decades, luxury hospitality was defined by visible symbols: larger suites, premium amenities, marble bathrooms and exceptional service.
By 2027, however, the strongest competitive advantage will increasingly be less tangible. Travellers are seeking emotional value, authenticity and experiences that could not be replicated elsewhere.
This does not make quality, cleanliness or service consistency less important—they remain essential standards. What is changing is the role of the hotel. Rather than simply accommodating guests, leading properties are becoming gateways to the destination, connecting travellers with local culture, people and traditions.

Authenticity cannot be a marketing theme or an activity added to the guest programme. It must be embedded throughout the guest journey—from design and food to concierge recommendations, staff knowledge and partnerships with local communities.
The commercial opportunity is significant. When travellers can compare hundreds of hotels within seconds, traditional luxury features become increasingly difficult to differentiate. Meaningful local experiences, however, can strengthen guest loyalty, generate stronger reviews, support ancillary revenue and create reasons to return.

For Skålleagues, this represents a powerful opportunity. Our global network connects hotels, restaurants, tour operators and destination professionals who can collaborate to create experiences that are commercially successful, culturally respectful and beneficial to local communities.
The new luxury is not simply having more. It is feeling more connected, more enriched and more inspired by the destination.
The hotel of 2027 will be the one guests cannot easily compare, copy—or forget.
