The World Is Changing. Is Skål International Changing Fast Enough?

Why the next generation of members, technology and global networking will shape Skål’s future

The world is not merely changing; it is accelerating.

Tourism is being transformed by artificial intelligence, shifting traveller expectations, emerging markets, digital ecosystems, and a generation that sees borders less as barriers and more as bridges. Business is becoming instantaneous, relationships increasingly global, and relevance is no longer inherited—it is earned every day.

In this rapidly evolving landscape, one question deserves our collective attention:

Is Skål International changing fast enough?

For an organisation built on friendship, fellowship and the principle of Doing Business Among Friends, the answer cannot simply be to preserve what has worked in the past. Our greatest responsibility is to protect the essence of Skål while continuously reinventing the way that essence is experienced by future generations.

The next chapter of Skål will be shaped by three defining forces: people, technology, and connectivity.

The first is our people.

The future belongs to a new generation of travel and tourism professionals—dynamic, digitally fluent, entrepreneurial, and globally minded. They are not looking merely for membership; they are looking for purpose, opportunity, mentorship, recognition, and meaningful relationships.
Skål International must become a place where a young professional can enter with ambition and discover a world of possibilities; where experience meets fresh thinking, where established leaders become mentors, and where the next generation is not simply invited to participate—but empowered to lead.

The second force is technology.

Digital transformation is no longer an option. It is an imperative. Artificial intelligence, intelligent networking platforms and real-time communication can dramatically enhance the way Skål members discover one another, exchange knowledge, generate business and remain connected across continents.

But technology must never replace the human spirit of Skål International.

It must amplify it.

The third force is global connectivity.

Skål International possesses something few organisations can replicate: a remarkable international community spanning destinations, cultures, professions and generations. Yet a network becomes truly powerful only when its members actively engage with one another.

The opportunity before us is to transform Skål from a network that members belong to into a global ecosystem in which members continuously connect, collaborate, create and contribute.

Imagine a world where a Skålleague in Africa can effortlessly build business with a colleague in Asia; where a young professional in Europe can find mentorship in the Americas; where an idea born in one club can inspire innovation across the entire organisation.

That is not merely networking.

That is global belonging with purpose.

Skål does not need to choose between tradition and transformation. Our future lies in combining both.

We must honour the friendships that built Skål while creating new pathways for those who will carry it forward.

The question is therefore not whether Skål should change.

It is whether we have the courage, imagination and collective will to change before the world changes beyond us.

The future will not wait.

Neither should Skål.

The world is changing. Let us ensure that Skål is not simply part of that change—but among those courageous enough to lead it.
